Colston Bassett Captures the Past

Colston Bassett Local History Group was established in 2005, with the aim of promoting the public education and understanding of the village and its fascinating history. It came about because there is considerable interest in the village from those who live here, former residents, and people researching family history. Over 150 people from this small community have already participated in events and activities since last September.

Colston Bassett is popular with visitors to the world-famous Stilton Dairy, The Martins Arms, Village Store and churches, and with those who enjoy walking and cycling in the area. It is evident from the buildings and landscape that the village enjoys a fascinating past. Although there is a comprehensive history of the village from Saxon times to the early 20th century (at www.nottshistory.org.uk), little has been recorded since. The past hundred years have seen a major transformation in village life, and the aim of the project is to record this through oral history recordings, photographs and other memorabilia.

We hope that many people will want to become actively involved and share photographs, documents and memories. The project will enable a library of oral history recordings to be made and transcribed, and a digitised photographic archive developed. These will be used for publications and a new village website. The project will also involve a range of events, talks and visits, exhibitions and regular newsletters.
